The History Of Horse Racing At Del Mar

Posted on September 3rd, 2010 in Entertainment | No Comments »

Southern California’s Del Mar Racetrack has been is often overshadowed by East Coast venues like Churchill Downs and Belmont Park. The reality is that the 72 year old track has a history to rival their better known counterparts that includes the greatest horses and jockeys in the sport, as well as a healthy dose of show biz glitz. Operated by the Del Mar Thoroughbred Club and located 20 miles North of San Diego, its perhaps most famous for its iconic slogan: “Where The Surf Meets the Turf.”

The Del Mar Thoroughbred Club was founded in the mid’30s, and they immediately turned their attention to building a world class horse racing venue. The names that were instrumental in the creation of Del Mar include a whos who of American entertainment–most notably Bing Crosby, Oliver Hardy (of Laurel and Hardy) and Jimmy Durante. At the time the facility opened thoroughbred horse racing was the second most popular sport in America behind major league baseball, and Del Mar’s show biz roots further helped secure its place as an important stop on the racing circuit.

The starpower drawn to the course was unprecedented. Bing Crosby himself greeted patrons at the gate on opening day, and during the late’30s and early’40s it became a place to be seen for Hollywood A-listers and those who aspired for celebrity. In addition to known gambling enthusiasts like W.C. Fields, Edgar Bergen and Red Skelton, the Del Mar patrons during that time also included some of the top female stars of the era including Ava Gardner, Paulette Goddard and Dorothy Lamour

Del Mar was the site of the’38 match race between Seabiscuit and Ligaroti. Seabiscut won the $25,000 winner take all challenge by a nose, and this race set Del Mar betting and attendance records and remains one of the most famous races in history. The racing at Del Mar continued to flourish until the start of WWII, when the track went ‘dark’ for racing.

After the war, Del Mar reopened with a bang. Following the surrender of Japan, President Harry S. Truman declared a national holiday for August 15,’45 and on that day Del Mar attracted over 20,000 fans through its gates who wagered what at the time was a record $958,476. The postwar prosperity was also a boon to Del Mar, which also benefitted from the Santa Fe Railroads daily Racetrack Special that brought bettors down from Los Angeles to enjoy a day at the track. During the latter part of the decade a new crop of Hollywood glitterati would flock to Del Mar, including Lucille Ball and Desi Arnaz, Mickey Rooney and Jimmy Durante. Durante would become such a regular that the turf course at Del Mar would later be renamed in his honor.

The annual race meet at Del Mar remains a highlight of the summer to this day. Del Mar remains one of the top tracks in the country, and have recently upgraded their facility with a state of the art grandstand and was one of the first tracks to install a new synthetic racing surface.

Welcome To The Future: Ipod Car Remote

Posted on August 24th, 2010 in News | No Comments »

Controlling a car with an iPod seems like something take out of a fairytale or of a science fiction movie. But a man who is bound to set new standards, Jonathan Over, has just proven that it is possible and it can be done with the help of his newly invented program. He showed the world how he can not only write about stuff in technical publications, but also create strange yet futuristic devices.

His application is an astonishing piece of technology, as he managed to include Dyno functions like speed reading, fuel level reading, temperature, engine throttle and so on with remote control functions like closing or opening doors and starting the car. The software it’s linked to a GSP and can offer full control regardless of the location, as it used Google Maps to localize the vehicle.

Your car has to be computerized. This means you will connect an in-car laptop to the car’s computer and connect a 3G modem to the laptop. This procedure allows the iPod to stay always connected to the car, Even if you are located in a different part of the world, you will still be able to view and control your car via iPod means. It sounds a bit strange and also unsafe, since any new software programs that’s using GPS seems so easily available to hackers, and since the program basically controls your car, you have to wonder what would happen if someone does manages to break into it.

You have to consider safety and accuracy before getting something like this for your car. But if by any chance it becomes something huge you will also need a iPod fm transmitter charger so that the functionality of the device is truly around the clock. It would be too funny to use such a sophisticated program and run off battery on the iPod.

It’s amazing to understand where things are right now, with all the new inventions and technologies available. No one though that iPod would appear when they did, and now, no one even dreamt of making a remote control for a car out of an iPod. And still, the fact is here and is true, which makes us think about tomorrow’s breakthrough.

A Basic Guide To Playing The Ponies

Posted on August 19th, 2010 in Entertainment | No Comments »

Sports gambling is a popular pursuit because everyone understands the basics of how teams win and lose and why. Horses, meanwhile, are an entirely different animal”no pun intended. It is a complex discipline unto itself, and a sound background in handicapping sports doesn’t insure success, or even mediocrity in handicapping the ponies. In fact, the history of sports betting is replete with successful gamblers that had a weakness for horse betting, with an emphasis on the word weakness. Most notable, perhaps, is the former resident handicapper at CBS, Jimmy The Greek Snyder. The story goes that The Greek was a first rate sports handicapper, but he couldn’t pick the winner of a one horse race when playing the ponies. The bad news for The Greek is that he enjoyed playing the ponies nonetheless, and often frittered away the money he won at the other end of the sportsbook.

Were not going to suggest that the information here even scratches the surface of what you need to know to become a serious horse handicapper. There are countless books, DVDs and other media that you should check out if this is your goal. If you’re interested in simply knowing the basics so that you can enjoy a day at the track, here are some basic concepts of horse handicapping:

Do your reading: When you arrive at the horse track you should purchase a copy of the Daily Racing Form (DRF for short) and the track program. The DRF is basically the ‘bible’ of horse race handicapping, and offers morning line odds, horse, trainer, jockey statistics and information on each race at every major track across the country. The track program offers similar information for that individual venue, often in more ‘user friendly’ form.

You’re not playing against the house: One thing to keep in mind when playing the horses that is drastically different from sports betting is that you’re not playing against ‘the house’, you’re playing against other betters. The track just accepts and pays bets, taking out a cut (called the ‘takeout’) for their services. The track odds are determined by the money bet on each horse. Long odds on a horse doesn’t necessarily indicate a ‘bad horse’ but just one that for whatever reason isn’t attracting bettor interest.

So where do odds in the newspaper or program originate? These are known as the ‘morning odds’ or ‘morning line’ and is basically an educated guess as to where the betting will go. They can be helpful as a handicapping tool, but may or may not reflect what will happen in the actual betting.

Horse handicapping basics: This is where horse racing gets complex–there are countless theories about how to handicap a horse race. Some handicappers consider the breeding lineage of the horse, while others are more concerned with past performance. Still others put more weight on the training a horse has received, or its workout performance.

Once a bettor reaches a conclusion about what he thinks will happen in a given race, it is still subject to the odds that are available when betting. This is similar to sports gambling, where an underdog may be more attractive due to an excessively high payback potential than he would ordinary, or, conversely, a clear favorite becomes an unattractive wagering proposition due to a prohibitively high price. Its all a matter of the math–if I could speak to the teenagers of America, I’d try to impress upon them the importance of doing well in math for no other reason than its importance in all forms of gambling.

Trainers and breeding: Some handicappers prioritize a horse’s breeding background–considering his bloodlines and the competitive quality of his parents and grandparents. Then training must be considered–a good trainer can often get a horse to ‘over perform’ much in the same way a good coach can get the most out of his team in sports.

The horse’s jockey: Jockeys are free agents, meaning that they get paid on their performance. In theory, this means that they’ll do their utmost to win in every given race. While there are a few exceptions, many serious horse handicappers downplay the importance of the jockey. Assuming the horse’s ‘mount’ is competent, there are much more salient factors to consider when handicapping a race than the jockey.

Find your own style, and maintain discipline: Basically, there’s not a ‘right’ or ‘wrong’ way to handicap a horse race. Figure out what works for you, and develop and refine your own methodology. As in any form of gambling, don’t bet more than you can afford to lose and in particular when you’re starting out there’s no reason to be making big wagers. If you want to learn more, there’s a number of good internet resources including the Daily Racing Form website.

Living Is Learning, Discovering The Natural Self

There is much talk of ecological crisis. It is said that most of these are man made. The ecological crisis that is being talked about consists of a vast array of problems. There are the oil spills that devastate vast areas in the sea and the coast line. The Exxon Valdez oil spill in 1989 off the coast of Alaska is one such. Global warming, a result of the emission of green house gases because of human activities could flood many islands that dot the Pacific Ocean. The depletion of ozone layer will increase the radiation from the sun reaching the earth. Many species will disappear as a result of deforestation as well as desertification. Large plain areas will be threatened with devastating floods due to the vanishing forests up in the hills. It is estimated that some 17,000 to as many as 100,000 species vanish every year. Over the last five decades, seven million square kilometers of forests have vanished. Only one-fifth of the original forests survive intact.

We do know from science that there is a strong inter-relationship between species, and between species and the non-living things in the environment. The survival of the species depends on the extent to which this inter dependence between species, whether micro-organisms, animals or plants, is possible. Ecosystems, scientists say, cannot be engineered and created by humans. It is only by letting the ecosystem survive that species will survive. That is why the importance of conservation and preservation is considered vital. But human progress through development and growth is threatening the survival of species.

It is hoped that the large scale appreciation of natural reserves will lead to conservation of these reserves. Camping in such reserves for the purpose of recreation and learning is considered to be one way of strengthening conservation. Responsible camping in such reserves also requires a living experience with camping tents. You need to select a tent that is suited to your needs.Kelty Green River 4 person tent accommodates four persons. It is a two season tent which could also be used as a base camp tent. Tents accommodating one to even ten persons with different features are available in the market.

It is important that visitors to the camping site do not interfere with nature. They should also respect local cultures as well. Appreciating nature for its complexity is vital. Understanding the different roles that nature plays reveals its mystery. What is more important is to recognize the fact that we belong to nature, and nature does not belong to us. We are related to nature as between children to their mother.

Activities like camping is a great avenue for you to know and recognize the value of nature. There’s only thing you need to remember if you want to go ahead with camping: responsibility.

NFL Preseason Handicapping Basics

Posted on June 20th, 2010 in Entertainment | No Comments »

Among the sports betting public there’s a lot of conflicting opinions about betting NFL preseason games. That’s not really surprising, since there doesn’t seem to be much middle ground on the subject. Overly cautious handicappers would argue that preseason football is a poor wagering opportunity. Some of the more obnoxious tout services would have you believe that short of a fixed game there is no greater “lock” that preseason football. Like most things that produce such polarized opinions, the truth is probably somewhere in the middle of the two extremes. Preseason NFL football is a unique proposition for the sports gambler, but when approached with caution, discipline and knowledge it can yield some profit.

First, let’s examine the case against preseason NFL wagering. Clearly the biggest argument against it is the simple fact that the games don’t count. Though spots will exist during regular season games when the motivation and preparation of individual teams may vary, in theory both teams want to win. That’s not always the case in preseason football, since different coaches have different goals. Some might want to just evaluate their personnel, others might want to establish a winning attitude, and all coaches want to keep their stars from getting injured. Factor in all of the variables and conflicting agendas, the preseason naysayer would argue, and there are just too many unknowns to consider taking a financial position on.

But like the old saying goes “every dark cloud has a silver lining”. And the divergent agendas at play in preseason football can be seen as precisely why it is a good wagering opportunity. For example, say the Superbowl champion Pittsburgh Steelers are set to play an ‘also ran’ team like the Houston Texans. By regular season standards, the Steelers would almost certainly be favored. In the preseason, however, they’ll often have a different agenda for the individual game. A “better” team has more concern about protecting key players. and usually has fewer personnel decisions to deal with. They don’t need to worry about implementing coaching changes, or creating ‘team chemistry’. As a result, ‘better’ teams frequently approach preseason games as a mere annoyance.

Now, lets look at the other side of the equation. A “lesser” team by regular season standards might have a number of starting spots or key backup spots up for grabs. They may have new coaches to impress, or new offensive or defensive coordinators whose schemes they’ll have to implement. Certainly, winning any games”whether or not they count in the standings”are of utmost importance to losing teams trying to turn things around. Finally, a bad team can gain a lot more psychologically from beating a playoff team than the playoff team can from beating a doormat. A struggling team that is destined to lose a lot during the regular season won’t have a lot of bright spots, so a preseason win against one of the league’s elite can mean a lot more.

Even among teams that don’t worry much about wins and losses during the preseason, they don’t want to go into the season losing them all. For that reason, one of the most successful preseason situations over the past decade and a half have been teams that lost their first two preseason affairs. During that span, 0-2 teams have hit right around 60% against the spread.

There may be no greater determining factor of a team’s preseason success than the philosophy of their head coach. Some coaches just don’t like to lose *any* game, and usually these hyper-competitive teams are good preseason bets. Bill Parcells, for example, was legendary for his serious approach to preseason games. The coaches that he mentored like the NY Giants’ Tom Coughlin have to some extent carried on this legacy. While the “good” preseason coaches are often reflected in the pointspreads assigned to their team, a motivated team is almost always worth a look.

One of the best tools that a handicapper has at his disposal during the preseason is the Internet. Actually, it’s a great tool year round but during the preseason it is invaluable. The best source of information on coaching philosophies, game plans, injuries, lineup changes, etc, are the local sports pages of NFL teams. Basically, the situation during preseason is that there is a lot of interest in the team and a lot of anxious beat writers looking to write stories. The problem is that there is little in the way of real news, and for that reason you’ll find the sort of minutiae on teams and players from which you can often extract relevant handicapping information. Even if there aren’t any nuggets of handicapping gold, you can at least get a feel for the coach’s goals for the game and the amount of playing time that key players will see. Sometimes coaches will come right out and say who will play at what juncture of the game, and will occasionally go on record that personnel decisions like evaluating all of the guys they’re considering for the backup defensive secondary jobs are more important than winning. Clearly, operating with this knowledge is a distinct advantage and operating without it can be fatal. There’s nothing more frustrating than betting on a team only to have them look like they could care less whether or not they win the game. During the preseason, however, it can frequently be prevented with some simple research and analysis.

In conclusion, there are certainly strong opportunities for profit in NFL preseason wagering but its essential to understand that it cannot be approached in the same manner as the regular season. And, as always, its important to remember that there will be more strong opportunities down the road and that discipline and rigor in handicapping is just as crucial in the preseason NFL as it is at any other time of the year.

Save Money On A Sea Vacation Tour By Following Tips

Posted on June 19th, 2010 in Entertainment | No Comments »

Here’s a really simple way to save on beach vacation travel. We are going to show you 3 ways to save you some bucks when booking your next beach vacation. The beach is an incredible experience. No matter whether you’ve traveled to far western Australia or taken a quick weekend trip to the Jersey Shore, barring rain, the beach is usually a really enjoyable experience.

We have taken journeys all over the world and we have missed large opportunities of money savings that had been seemingly all around us if we had just taken the time to do a research. Probably, you are in luck. The travel research has been carried out for you, all you need to do is to keep reading. Earlier than you know it, you will be taking the seaside trip of your life, for a steeply discounted price. Here we go:

Typically, people can put their trip options up at discounts. Do you know that there are all kinds of individuals on the market who have time shares but can’t use them for varied reasons? Perhaps the season is not proper, or they may not get the flight that they need. E bay has a thriving market for timeshare opportunities. A variety of the listings are present (e.g. people in search of others to buy their vacation shares out completely), but sometimes individuals are just trying to monetize a week worth of timeshare that they can’t seem to make use of themselves. Their loss will be your opportunity. E bay is an auction giant, and the highest worth wins usually.

Study the whole lot, guess what? Expedia and Orbitz seem like they are juggernauts of travels and they control quite a lot of the market. However, they don’t have every vendor available. Plenty of the low cost airlines like South West and Jet Blue don’t use either of those massive firms and you can solely get their offers by going directly to their website. Don’t’ tell anybody, however from what we have heard Jet Blue is meant to have really nice seats and screens on new planes with actually good prices. We haven’t used Jet Blue ourselves but, but it surely supposed be really good (particularly at delivering goods worth on Northeast to Florida routes). That tip alone may save some bucks whereas getting you a really nice flight.

The first 2 points are perfectly valid in any trip planning but almost worthless when you consider that you might have to shell out a lot more bucks for destinations abroad. There is a beautiful beach state located not too far from anyone east of the Mississippi. That’s right. Florida. Florida is back and it’s beaches are still fantastic. Florida is still beautiful. There has been a lot of development of Florida during the last 50 years, but Florida is still a massive state with plenty of undiscovered beaches. The state of Florida can be great if you know where to look. It’s pretty nice. Trust us….the undiscovered spots of Florida can really be something else. However, they are becoming more and more difficult to find as thousands of people move to Florida every month.

Canada’s Unique Flair In Its Restaurants And Cuisine

Posted on June 10th, 2010 in Entertainment | No Comments »

As the second largest country in the world and the largest in North America Canada is an extremely diverse area. This diversity is seen in its people, its countryside and its food. The Canadian palate is an extensive one and this of course carries over into its restaurants. There is a massive range of different Canadian dishes that are prepared in almost all regions of this huge country. Like all countries Canada has the full range of different cuisines. Like all countries Canada also puts its own unique spin on the different nationalities favorite dishes.

One of the things that is prevalent in portions of Canada is a strong French influence to their cooking. It is not unusual to find a French influence in Canadian restaurants. Even with this influence you will find traditional Canadian ingredients in a lot of the French dishes.

Just like the United States, Canada had a great deal of railroad workers that were from China. These hard working people adapted their own traditional cooking to the ingredients found in abundance in the rich Canadian soil. They found ways to use the game meats and fresh vegetables in order to create their traditional dishes. This desire for their own cuisine bled over into the Canadian restaurant industry. Just like the United States Canadian adapted Chinese fast food as well as sit down eateries can be found all over the country.

There are also Canadian influenced Greek establishments in almost all the provinces of Canada. Even though there is a huge difference between ingredients the resourceful immigrants adapted them to their own cooking. This gave rise to Greek establishments as well.

There are some foods served in popular restaurants that are specific to Canada and have a decisively Canadian flair. One of these foods served in a lot of diner style eateries is poutine. If you have never heard of this dish it definitely deserves a description.

Poutine is essentially a dish with a french fry base. This of course brings to mind fast food but is far from it. The fries are then coated with a fresh cheese curd and covered in brown gravy. Other meats are sometimes added to it until it becomes a blend of whatever happens to be around. Very similar to nachos it tends to be a favorite.

Some of Canada’s top restaurant choices are very regional. You have a great deal of sea food on the coasts, moving to different heavier game style eateries in the interior, and the French influence of Quebec has to be mentioned. This is not to say that you cannot find any type of food throughout the country it is just that some areas are known for certain types of food.

Regardless of your tastes you are sure to find restaurants with a unique Canadian flair all over this vast diverse country. Not only is Canada culturally diverse they enjoy tastes from all over the world. Like all countries they put their own spin on things using the fresh vegetables and wild game found across the country.
