Milan City Breaks

Posted on August 29th, 2009 in Entertainment | No Comments »

by David Norman

Recreation and Milan city breaks are practically synonymous. Milan has grown to be quite a sophisticated city, and is Italy’s commercial capital. For those who love to shop, Milan is a place that can boast many things in this category. Their own ‘Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II is one of the most famous shopping areas in the world. And while you’re in Milan, why not take in an opera at their La Scala Theatre.

If you get there and go to the Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II, you’ll find shopping unlike any place you’ve ever shopped before. And if you love opera, then you’ve landed in the right place to totally satisfy your opera appetite. If you visit the La Scala theatre you’ll be pleasantly surprised at the great opera you can experience there. For the architects, the old ancient buildings and churches should be more than enough to make your mouth water.

For you who are into fashion, then you’ll never forget Milan. Like I said, Milan city breaks wreak of variety. Four squares make up the main hub for fashion in Milan. One is the Piazza Cordusio, then there’s the Piazza San Babila, and the Piazza Carioli, and finally the Piazza Duomo. You can find great shopping around these four squares unlike anything you’ve seen anywhere else.

You’ll find Milan in the Lombardy Region. The Milan province is located within this Italian region. The stock exchange of Italy also resides in this region. Hanging inside some of it’s churches is a history buff and an artist’s dream. This would be some of the work of Leonardo da Vinci himself. The one we all seem to remember the most is his famous ‘Last Supper’, and it can be found here in Milan at the Church of Santa Maria dell Grazie.

Milan contains three subway lines, and rank second in size as far as railways go in Italy. Their ‘Happy Hour’ consists of a buffet along with drinks for around five Euros. The hotels are exquisite and you can find them that are cheap enough to leave you plenty of money for exploring this beautiful city and enjoying your stay.

Again, Milan city breaks wreak of variety in all that you can do and all you can learn. If you’re the type of person who loves the countryside, then by all means hop a train out to the Lombardy mountains where you can see some of the most beautiful country ever, loaded with lakes and valleys and scenery that will take your breath away. Yes, if you decide on taking your break in Milan, then you’re going to be glad about it from now on.

Best Restaurants in the World

Posted on August 25th, 2009 in Entertainment | No Comments »

by Amy Nutt

Opinions about restaurants have always been a topic of conversation, especially for those places which have become popular for their food or style. In looking for a new restaurant or just to see if ones opinion is the same others, there are many sources to check on what another persons opinions are about a particular restaurant.

Recognized authorities When we speak to families and friends about a restaurant, we all have our individual points that matter in a dining experience. Two people may go into the same restaurant at the same time, order the same item and still have differing opinions about the food, presentation, service and ambiance.

There are many authorities on the experience of dining at a restaurant. Most magazines, television and newspaper organizations have food critics and commentators who dine and report on new restaurants and food trends. Many authorities count on individual opinions to rate on certain points such as the type of food, quality, quantity and the skill of the chef. Other points include the quality and selection of accompanying beverages such as wine or spirits. Service, presentation and the experience in the dining area count as well in the rating of the restaurant.

Some authorities such as Zagat or Michelin, rely on diners ratings and experiences that are tallied and when applied to a rating system, a measurement in the form of stars or points are given to a particular eating establishment. However with so many eating places and the actual physical effort of tallying opinions of persons who at times may get to sample only a slim cross section of restaurants, properly rating a large area even a single city, can be very difficult.

There are magazines and websites which are dedicated to rating restaurants in a city or region, where people can write about their dining experience. Examples of these sites include Menuism and Yelp. These sites allow users to join as a reviewer, select a restaurant, and enter a rating according to their system and a review for the establishment. While these are good sources for finding a good place to eat, each persons criteria again are different with respect to the entire dining experience.

A noted authority of ratings for ratings is Restaurant Magazine. The San Pellegrino Worlds 50 Best Restaurants Awards and List is organized and compiled by Restaurant Magazine, sponsored by San Pellegrino and other companies.

The winners are chosen by a poll of over 800 food writers, commentators and critics organized into 26 panels representing the different regions of the world. Each panel member has a total of five votes; with no more than three can go to establishments in their region.

Koala Bears - Death Of Sam the Victorian Bushfire Koala

Posted on August 24th, 2009 in Celebrity | No Comments »

by Jennifer Schellington

In February 2009 bush fires had a devastating affect on the state of Victoria. The fires burnt over 400,000 hectares with 210 people losing their lives and thousands losing their homes.

There was one ray of hope that united the nation during these difficult times - the rescue of a Koala called Sam. Millions saw the video of Sam being given water from a fire fighter. The Koala had second and third degree burns on its paws but recovered well at South Ash Wildlife Refuge.

Sam the Koala it turned out had a disease that has devastated nearly 50% of the Koala species. It is called “urogenital chlamydia” which you may have heard of as a sexually transmitted disease in humans. The disease affects Koalas similarly, leading to female infertility, urinary tract infections and can lead to blindness.

Last week Sam was due to have an operation to remove cysts in her abdomen caused by the disease. It was clear however when they started to operate that the disease had spread. Sam was euthanized as it was decided that nothing more good be done for her. It would have left her in too much pain to keep her alive.

David Tree, the Firefighter who rescued the Koala was said to be in floods of tears. The Koala had become a symbol of hope and of course had shown true survival skills. There will be a commemorative plaque erected in Sam’s honour in the place where he was given the water by the firefighter.

The Koala is a native animal of Australia and one you should try and see on your visit to Australia. They tend to live high up in Eucalyptus trees as this is their main food supply. Normally Koalas don’t drink water as they get all the water they need from the Eucalyptus leaves.

They are marsupials which means they carry their young in a pouch. The baby Koala is called a joey and is only 2cm long when it is born. It then lives inside the pouch for about 6 months. After that it spends time in and out of the pouch until it is big enough and strong enough to survive on its own.

There are many places you can see Koalas from wildlife parks to special Koala sanctuaries. Some of these places even allow you to hold them and cuddle them. It’s best however to see them in the wild and there are a few places that the locals know about where you are likely to spot Koalas. They are certainly harder to see than Kangaroos, but if you know where to look, you can see them in the wild.

Koalas can be very ferocious so don’t think about trying to cuddle one in the wild! You only need to look at their paws to see why and they get very annoyed if they are woken from their sleep.

For a local’s perspective on where to see Koalas in the wild, go to the Real Australia Travel website detailed below. It also contains some interesting facts as well as the video of Sam taking the water from the firefighter.

What is a Timeshare?

Posted on August 21st, 2009 in Entertainment | No Comments »

by Larry Evans

In the past, people who own real properties were considered rich. A mans place in the society is determined by how many hectares of land he owns. People of royal descent and the big business men had villas, castles, vacation homes, and farm lands while those who belong to the lowest class in a society did not have any amount of land. This scenario is still very much alive today. A mans riches is still gauged by the number of condominiums and homes he has.

Back then, only those who had cash can afford to buy a house. The cost of top quality housing today is cheaper than the yesteryears making most of us acquire our very own properties. Now there are property developers who are building low-cost, top quality housing for the entire family. Financial programs abound for anyone who wants to have his very own home.

There are those who prefer to have a two-bedroom house or a cottage right at the heart of a popular tourist destination to let them be at the center of all fun filled activities. There are varied designs and any location is possible. With this modern-day trend, timesharing gained its foothold to globetrotters and adventure seekers. Timeshare is a method where people can use the home of another person for certain period of time.

Among the advantages of timesharing is it lowers maintenance costs because the owner would not incur costs in maintaining the property while he is out of town. The other owner does this in his behalf. Maintenance costs may include household repairs and fees agreed by neighborhood associations.

Many people prefer timeshare for it is easy to do and it is cost effective at the same time. The key to a worry-free timeshare is to draft a good contract and to find a responsible co-owner. There are a lot of resources in the Web that can help you do this, be sure to check them out.

Plug-in Hybrid Cars vs Hybrid Cars

Posted on August 15th, 2009 in Uncategorized | No Comments »

by Colin Jones

Hybrid cars are on everyone’s lips these days. $20, $30, $40 or even $50 for a tank of fuel? Who really wants to pay that sort of money? But, frustrated, the petrol customer sighs, but pays up. However, hybrid vehicles are being richly applauded for the small amount of fuel they need to operate, and they are being driven off the forecourts of car dealerships each and everyday in ever increasing numbers.

However, what about a plug-in hybrid? Most drivers have heard that these cars are great too. So, someone might be asking him or herself, what exactly a plug-in hybrid is? How they work, and what the difference between a plug-in hybrid and a regular hybrid is?

Plug-in hybrid cars are able to run just on batteries, but they can also run on fuel also. These types of hybrid cars have some of the features of hybrid vehicles. They are also very similar to all-electric vehicles.

Plug-in hybrid cars must be recharged externally by connecting a plug to an electrical power source. The combustion engine in plug-in hybrid vehicles is used only as a back up. These cars can run only on batteries if desired, but it is expected that these types of hybrid cars are recharged daily.

Hybrid cars travel just as many miles as a conventional car. Designed to go the extra mile where fuel-mileage is concerned, hybrids can be driven on the highway, in cities, or wherever else a person needs to travel.

On the other hand, plug-in hybrids are designed to be driven commuter-length distances, meaning between twenty and sixty miles between destinations. This way, the plug-in hybrid does not have to use its back up combustion engine, but plug-in hybrids can go further using gas too.

Hybrids help to reduce pollution, but they do still pollute the air. Compared with plug-in hybrids, hybrid cars still have a long way to go as far as pollution is concerned. Because plug-in hybrid cars can run solely on their battery power, they don’t have to emit waste fuel emissions at all.

Plug-in hybrids actually do combat greenhouse gas emissions and plug-in hybrids use virtually no oil imported or not. Studies have shown that electric hybrids emit at least 67% less greenhouse gases compared to gasoline cars. Since the product used to power plug-in hybrids is renewable, the difference in greenhouse gas emissions may be even greater than the study indicated.

And so there you have it. Those are the main differences between plug-in hybrids and regular hybrid cars. It makes a big difference, but you would be surprised how little that matters at the current moment. And that’s only because plug-in hybrids are not being marketed to consumers at this present time. But this article should get you excited about the wonderful plug-in hybrid car, coming soon to a forecourt near you.

And it’s going to be a great debut too - people already like regular hybrid cars, but they haven’t seen anything until they see the new plug-in hybrid cars. However, for now, maybe we should just be satisfied with what we already have, because who knows? Before plug-in hybrid cars come out onto the forecourts, something even better might be introduced onto the market.
